Tech will be on a two-hour delay on Thursday 2/5/09.

This means that the school does not open until 10:00 AM.  This delay does not affect the CHM 110 class on Thursday.  We will meet as usual at 11:00 AM for class and 2:30 PM for lab.

What a week we’ve had so far!

CHM 100 Students

If you missed today’s (2/4/09) 9:30 AM CHM 100 class due to the weather and were unable to turn in your significant figures quiz, please turn it in at the beginning of Monday’s class.  I will delay posting the quiz answers here at the website until then.  Remember, though, that the first CHM 100 test, covering chapters 1-3, is on Wednesday.  Make sure you’ve read chapters 1-3 before Monday’s class and come to class prepared to ask any questions you might have on the material.

CHM 111 Students

We’ll have lecture class today (2/4/09).  Try to come if you can get here safely.  I’ve moved this week’s experiment (22B) to next week so you won’t miss lab if you can’t get here for weather-related reasons.  [See the updated lab schedule by clicking this link.]

The reports for experiment 9B and the salicylic acid characterization lab will be due at our next lab meeting, 2/11/09.

Yes, we have class today!

Yes, it’s cold.

Here are the dates of upcoming chemistry tests

  • CHM 100 sections 01 and 02:  2/11/09.  Test covers chapters 1-3.
  • CHM 110 section 1:  2/12/09.  Test covers chapters 1-2

MLK Holiday

Monday 1/19/09 is a holiday.  The school will be closed, and no classes or labs will meet.  Here’s how the holiday will affect your chemistry schedule.

CHM 100 students

  • No lecture on Monday 1/19
  • Section 1 lab will not meet on 1/19.  You will perform the introductory experiment on 1/26.
  • Section 2 lab will meet on Tuesday 1/20.  You will perform the introductory experiment.  I will hand out a copy of the experiment when you get to lab, but if you want to look it over before coming in, here it is: [CHM 100 Introductory Experiment]

CHM 110 students

  • Your class schedule is unaffected by the holiday.  You will perform the introductory experiment (the same one as the CHM 100 class) on Thursday 1/22.

CHM 111 students

  • No lecture on Monday 1/19
  • You will perform Experiment 9B on Wednesday 1/21.  Remember that the prelab for the experiment (pages 177-178 inyour lab manual) is due at the beginning of the lab period.  Please have it ready when you walk in.  Also, don’t forget your lab manual and notebook on Wednesday.

Finals

Final exams are next week.  Here’s some answers to some questions you might have?

When’s my final and where do I go to take it?

Class Section(s) Time Location
CHM 100 1 and 2 Wednesday 12/10/08 at 9:00 AM Room 5401
CHM 110 1 and 2 Monday 12/08/08 at 10:30 AM Room 5401

What should I bring to the final?

Bring a scientific calculator with fresh batteries and several pencils or pens to the exam.  (You will not be allowed to use your cell phone as a calculator, since it could also be used for cheating via text message.)

When do I get my grades?

I will attempt to have your grades entered into [the webadvisor system] by the end of finals week.  The system may not release your grades for viewing until the beginning of the following week, so please don’t panic if your grades aren’t visible over the weekend!

Please don’t call me about your grades.  Privacy policy forbids me from discussing your grades over the phone.  If you would like to view your final exam (or if you think there’s been some error in how I calculated your grade and would like to discuss it), then please [send me an e-mail] and we’ll try to work out some time to meet in person.

I’m a CHM 100 student.  Any study tips?

Start with [the study guides].  Go through each one.  They’re organized as a list of things that you might be asked to do on the final exam.  [Use the class notes] to help you be able to do the things listed in the study guides.  Try the suggested practice problems at the bottom of each guide and the and the [practice sets on the web] to see if you really know what you’re doing.  (Side note:  We didn’t cover molecular shape in Chapter 10, so you’re not responsible for that.  You are responsible for the rest of the chapter 10 study guide.)

For more practice, try the [quizzes].  I have posted answers to each quiz we’ve taken – in most cases I’ve posted detailed solutions and not simply ‘answers”.  These can help you, particularly if you’re stuck on how to work a math problem.

You also have tests 1-3 to study.  Use these tests like the quizzes – as practice problems.  Remember, though, that your tests only cover up through chapter 7, so you’ll need to rely more on the quizzes, class notes, and study guides for chapters 8, 9, and 10.

For even more practice, you can use the problems at the end of each chapter in the textbook.  Answers for each of the odd-numbered problems are in the back of the book.

For additional help, try the supplemental notes for chapters 1-9, available on the sidebar of the page.

You also have tests 1-4*** to study.  Use these tests as practice problems.

If you still need more practice, you can use the problems at the end of each chapter in the textbook.  Answers for each of the odd-numbered problems are in the back of the book.

***Test 4 has been graded and will be returned on Friday, 12/5/08.

CHM 110 and CHM 100 students!

CHM 110 students

Your lab exam is coming up.  I have posted [a study guide for the lab exam].  Please remember to bring your lab notebook to the lab exam!  I will take up your lab notebook for a final check after you take your lab exam.  Also, remember to bring a calculator!

CHM 100 students

Your second lab test is coming up.  I have posted [a study guide for the second lab test].  Please remember to bring a calculator to the lab test!

CHM 100: A little last-minute practice

Here’s another practice set with four problems from Chapter 7.  Two ov the problems involve the molarity unit, which we discussed in class but isn’t in the textbook.

[CHM 100 mass/mole and molarity practice set]

And here are the answers.  Remember – try the set on your own before looking at the answers!

If you have any questions about the practice set or any last-mnute wuestions about the upcoming test, post them here!

CHM 110: Make-up tests on 11/4/08

If you were scheduled to take a make-up test today (11/4/08), I was informed that the assessment center will only be open from about 11 AM until 4 PM today due to the election.

If you can’t make it today (11/4/08), then you may take the test tomorrow (11/5/08) during the assessment center’s normal hours.
