CHM 110: Lab schedule changes

The lab schedules for CHM 110 sections 1 and 2 (the Monday/Wednesday sections) have been updated.  These changes were necessary because

  1. The flooding closed FDTC for two days, one of which was a lab period.
  2. FDTC has announced that classes will be cancelled on October 28 (a Wednesday) so that high school students may visit the campus.

To see the schedule updates, [click this link] or use the link to the lab schedule in the sidebar.

The lab schedule for the Thursday lab (section 3) has not been changed.

FDTC closed Tuesday 10/06/15

From the FDTC web site…

Alert: The college will be closed for all students, faculty, and staff all day on Tuesday, October 6th 2015.

Due to ongoing problems with flooded roadways, FDTC will not be holding classes Tuesday.  This will impact the Tuesday/Thursday chemistry class.

CHM 110-03:  Test 2 is rescheduled for Tuesday, 10/13/15.  The lab schedule is unaffected.

FDTC closed Monday 10/05/15

From the FDTC web site…

Alert: The college will be closed for all students, faculty, and staff all day on Monday October 5th 2015. A decision will be made later about evening college.

Due to “historic” flooding around our area, FDTC will not be holding day classes Monday.  This will impact some of our chemistry classes.  Here’s how the closing will affect you:

CHM 101-01ET:  The homework assignment is now due at the beginning of class on Wednesday, 10/07/15.  Test 2 is rescheduled for Monday, 10/12/15.

CHM 110-01 and 02:  Test 2 is rescheduled for Monday, 10/12/15.  Section 1 (Monday) lab for 10/05/15 is cancelled, and the lab schedule will be readjusted.  Wednesday’s lab will meet as scheduled for Experiment 4C.

CHM 110-03:  So far, this flood event does not impact our class or lab schedule.  If that changes, I’ll post information here and send an e-mail to your FDTC e-mail address.

CHM 110 01 and 02: Monday Lab Schedule Changes

Due to my absence on Monday 9/21/15, I’ve had to alter the lab schedule a bit for the Monday lab.  Here are the changes.

  • 9/28:  The Monday lab section will perform Experiment 3A – Empirical formula of an oxide.
  • 10/5:  No change in the day’s experiment.  Monday lab will perform Experiment 4C as was originally planned.
  • 10/12:  The Monday lab section will perform Experiment 3B: Thermal decomposition of hydrates.  Lab notebooks will be due for midterm grading at the end of this lab period.

I have put these updates on the Lab schedule (110) page.

The Wednesday lab section schedule has not been changed in any way.

Class Cancellations – Monday 9/21/15

Due to illness, I’m cancelling CHM 101-01ET, CHM 110-01, and CHM 110-02 for today, Monday 9/21/15.

CHM 101:  We’ll finish covering the Chapter 10 material (sections 10.1-10.5) on energy and will then go back to Chapter 4 once we’re done.  Go ahead and take a look at the Chapter 4 material so you’ll be prepared.  I’ve updated the D2L gradebook with your scores from the second attempt of Test 1, and I’ll give you back the actual papers at our next class meeting on Wednesday.

CHM 110 01 and 02:  Read over chemical nomenclature (in Chapter 2) before Wednesday’s class.  I’ve updated the D2L gradebook with your scores from the second attempt of Test 1, and I’ll give you back the actual papers at our next class meeting on Wednesday.  If your score doesn’t appear to have changed, you scored better (or the same) on your first attempt.

Monday lab will not meet this week since I’m out, but the Wednesday lab is still on – and we will do Experiment 3A this week.  We will need to adjust the Monday lab schedule a bit to work around this unexpected holiday.  I will update the lab schedule on Tuesday when I’m back on campus.

Free tutoring available in the Success Center

From our friends at the Success Center:

Good news! There will be chemistry tutoring in the Success Center, at least through September. Chemistry tutoring should still be supported through the semester; I will keep  you updated.

My hours are Tuesday 1 pm – 6 pm, and Wednesdays 8 am – 1 pm.

Fabiola will also be available but hasn’t confirmed her schedule yet – students can stop by or call.

We love helping chemistry students in the Success Center!

Karen Herbert

The [Success Center] is located in the 300 building and is open on weekdays.  I strongly encourage chemistry students to take advantage of this resource while it’s available!

CHM 110: Correction on ISBN numbers for textbooks

The syllabus had the wrong ISBN number listed for the main course textbook.  The correct ISBN for the Ebbing 10th edition textbook is:
ISBN-10: 1-285-05137-8
ISBN-13: 978-1-285-05137-6

The lab manual’s ISBN was correct in the syllabus, but here it is again for reference:
ISBN-10: 1-111-98942-7
ISBN-13: 978-1-111-98942-2

If you’re planning on renting the textbooks or purchasing online, you might find this information helpful in locating the correct books.
