General announcements. All students should read these.

Weather Alert!

This just in at 10:35 AM:

Florence-Darlington Technical College will be closed for students after 1 p.m., April 5, 2017 due to the possibility of inclement weather.  This closing announcement also applies to FDTC sites and scheduled activities after 1 p.m.  Please monitor the College’s website at www.fdtc.edu for further updates.

What that means for Wednesday’s chemistry classes:

CHM 110 Section 1 lab is cancelled on 4/5/17.  While the lab starts at 11:00 AM, the 1:00 PM closing does not give us sufficient time to finish the experiment and clean up before the campus closes.  The report for experiment 5B that was due today will be due at our next lab meeting on Wednesday 4/12/17.

CHM 110 Section 2 lecture is cancelled on 4/5/17.  The CHM 110 Section 2 lecture test that was scheduled will be given on Monday, April 10.

If you have any questions about this, leave a comment or send me an e-mail!

“Success Day” note

If you’re having trouble finding the schedule for “Success Day” on the main FDTC site, here is a more direct link:

https://www.fdtc.edu/student-life/success-day

CHM 110 students can receive 5 points added to their first test grade by going to one of our sessions and bringing in their tickets.

CHM 111 can receive 5 points added to the first test as well, again by bringing in a ticket.

Here are the sessions that are most relevant for CHM 110 students

Time Location Session Information
8:00 – 8:40 (AM) Room 300 (300 building) Ions, Compounds and Moles
Learn amazing facts about the Periodic Table – learn about
ions and how they form chemical compounds, how to
name the compounds and learn how to calculate moles.
Moles aren’t just cute little rodents, they are the official
chemistry unit of measure.
2:20 – 3:00 (PM) Room 300 (300 building) Unite for Units
Understanding how units work and how to use them in
everyday life.

CHM 110 and CHM 111: Final grades now available!

I have posted final grades for CHM 110 and CHM 111.  You may get your grades from these places:

  1. [Desire2Learn].  You can see individual test grades and your numeric average on Desire2Learn (D2L), as well as your letter grade.  Grades are available on D2L now. If you would like a copy of all of your grades from the course as well as your numeric average, print them from D2L now.  You will only have access to this semester’s grades on D2L for a week or two – whether or not you are attending classes in the spring.
  2. [WebAdvisor].  Webadvisor is your link to official FDTC data.  The grade on Webadvisor is your official grade, and will be the one recorded on your transcript.  WebAdvisor will only show your final letter grade, not your individual assignment grades or numeric average.  Grades will be available on WebAdvisor on Monday morning.

A NOTE TO CHM 110 STUDENTS PLANNING TO TAKE CHM 111

If you’re a CHM 110 student who is planning on taking CHM 111 in the spring, don’t sell your textbook or lab manual!  We will be using the same materials for CHM 111 as we did for CHM 110.  The only thing you will need to buy new for CHM 111 is a lab notebook (a cheap composition book like you might use for an English class).

All that said …

Enjoy your winter break!

Spreadsheet program

For those of your in CHM 110, this week’s project requires you to use a spreadsheet to make a calibration curve – a plot of the absorbance of cobalt chloride vs the concentration of cobalt chloride.  Many of you likely have some version of Microsoft Office on your computers, but if you don’t there are some options:

  1. FDTC computer labs have Office installed.  There is an open computer lab on the 4th floor ot the 5000 building.
  2. You can install the free office suite Libreoffice, which contains an Office-compatible spreadsheet program, word processor, and presentation program.  In fact, I use Libreoffice to type your CHM 110 tests and to create the supplemental notes that you can download on this site.
