Some other notes:
CHM 10 and 111 students: Lab exam grades have been posted on D2L.
Your midterm grades are now available on D2L. The grade will be shown in the form of a fraction – something like
74.00 / 88.75 B
… which means that this student’s current average is 74.00/88.75 = 83. D2L’s doing this because some parts of your grade (like the laboratory exam, notebook, and cleanliness/safety grades) haven’t had anything assigned to them yet. At the end of the term, your final numerical grade will be shown the normal way, since all the components of your grade will have been entered.
No grades have been dropped or replaced yet. That will happen at the end of the term.
The letter grade on D2L is correct as shown – you don’t need to divide the numbers out to know your letter grade.
Just letting everyone know that I will be there for today’s CHM 110 and 111 classes!
CHM 110 03 students: Looks like I’m going to need one more day to recover from my illness. As a result, I won’t be in on Wednesday 1/23. I plan to be back on Thursday 1/24.
We’ll pick up where we left off at our Monday meeting. Your homework assignment that was originally due on 1/23 is now due on Monday. Start reading Chapter 2 if you haven’t done so already.
If you need to see me in person before Monday, drop by the office on Thursday or Friday – but check here first to make sure I’ll be on campus. If you have any other questions, you may leave them in the comments section of this post or e-mail me directly.
CHM 110 01/02 and CHM 111 students. I caught some sort of illness over the weekend and I’m still trying to recover from it. As a result, I won’t be in on Tuesday 1/22. I plan to be back on Wednesday 1/23 if possible.
Here’s how my absence will affect your classes:
CHM 110 01/02: We’ll pick up where we left off at our Thursday meeting. Your homework assignment that was originally due on 1/22 is now due on Thursday. Start reading Chapter 2 if you haven’t done so already. Since CHM 110 lab wasn’t meeting this week anyway, there will be no change in the lab schedule.
CHM 111: We’ll pick up where we left off in Chapter 11 on Thursday. We’ll do the IR lab (and finish up experiment 9B) during next week’s lab period. It won’t hurt your 9B products to sit and dry for a few more days. I’ll post an updated lab schedule here on the site when I get a chance.
If you have any questions, leave a comment here.
For CHM 110 students:
Monday is a holiday, so section 3 students (M/W)won’t be coming to chemistry class until Wednesday. Since section 3’s laboratory is on Monday, no sections of CHM 110 will have lab the week of January 21-January 25. This will ensure that all the laboratory sections of 110 will be doing the same experiment each week. Lecture classes for sections 1/2 are unaffected and will meet on Tuesday and Thursday.
Your second homework assignment (the first one was to bring back the syllabus signature page) has been posted. Scroll down, find your assignment, print it out, work it, and bring it with you to our next class meeting. Sections 1 and 2 – that’s Tuesday. Section 3 – that’s Wednesday due to the holiday. A few things about the homework:
For CHM 111 students:
The holiday on Monday doesn’t affect us. Lecture and lab will meet next week as scheduled.
Tutoring is now available:
For anyone who missed Karen Herbert’s comment yesterday, we have tutors available for CHM 110 and CHM 111 in the success center:
Reminder – chemistry tutors are available in the Success Center. [Karen Herbert is] there Wednesday/Thursday/Friday mornings. Matthew Collier is here in the afternoons (off Fridays) and on Sundays 2-6pm.
I encourage you to take advantage of this free service if you need a little extra help in CHM 110 or CHM 111.
For CHM 110 students:
Remember to bring your syllabus signature page to the next class period (if you haven’t done so already), as it counts as your first homework grade this semester.
Also, CHM 110 labs are starting. We will be doing an introductory experiment (which you can read about by looking at the CHM 110 handouts link on the right side of the page) and going over lab policies and safety information during the lab period. If you’ve not had the chance to buy a lab manual or notebook yet, don’t worry about it – neither are required for the introductory experiment.
For CHM 111 students:
Remember to bring your syllabus signature page to the next class period (if you haven’t done so already). If you bring it on time, you will get a few bonus points on your first test.
During Tuesday’s laboratory period, we’ll perform experiment 9B. You will need to bring both your laboratory notebook and laboratory manual to the lab. If you want to use your own pair of safety glasses in lab instead of borrowing a pair of goggles, you should make sure to purchase them and bring them to lab with you.
